Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.
Most electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination but some types of defect can only be found by testing.
However, it is essential to understand that visual examination is an essential part of the process because some types of electrical safety defect can’t be detected by testing alone,
this includes 110v cables, extension leads and handheld power tools which are used extensively throughout the construction industry.
Regular inspection of equipment is an essential part of any preventative maintenance programme.
The Electricity at Work Regulations recommends that maintenance, including test results, should be kept throughout the working life of the electrical equipment to
enable the condition of the equipment to be monitored; and to empower the duty holder responsible for the inspection and testing regime to assess the future frequency required
between formal visual inspections and any combined inspections and test.
